The photographic film Essere d’Acqua emerges from an archive of more than 50,000 images collected from the 1980s to the present by Paolo Spigariol, naturalist photographer and multimedia author, documenting the Venetian Lagoon. Conceived in 2019, the project grew through the collaboration with writer Isabella Panfido and director Enrico Soci. A four-handed direction that intertwines the time of photography with cinematic rhythm, naturalistic and poetic languages, together with the music of Giuseppe Laudanna and the sounds and voices of the Lagoon. The film unfolds through seasons and themes. The story of the creatures inhabiting the Venetian Lagoon, its most intimate landscapes and its transformations, is punctuated by the six-episode story of fisherman Ciano Mazaneta, the crab-man and protagonist of the tale Sant’Erasmo from Isabella Panfido’s book Lagunario. The two narrative layers intertwine in a flow of visual and sonic suggestions: the authentic breathing of the Lagoon, an eternal movement that separates and unites water, land and sky.
