Essere d’Acqua is a 65-minute photographic film in cinemascope format with 5.1 surround audio, dedicated to the Venetian Lagoon. It explores this ecosystem as a living organism, following the rhythm of seasons, tides and the creatures that inhabit it. The project is also the result of more than two years of experimentation. The post-production of Essere d’Acqua became a space of freedom and discovery. Editing a photographic film means giving rhythm to duration without sequence. Suggesting movement where there is stillness. Giving sound to what is silent. The film contains more than one thousand sound contributions, the same number as the photographic and video images composing it, synchronized down to the millisecond. These are the “soundscapes”: an interplay of natural sounds and human voices, together with the secret words of the Lagoon and its many dialects — names of birds, fish, places and fishing tools. Lagoon from the air. Lagoon underwater. Lagoon at water level. A hybrid amphibious universe told through cameras that became amphibious themselves thanks to a series of custom-built housings. No generative AI was used in the making of this film: every image was captured live in the Venetian Lagoon.
